Talk to Your Doctor
First, visit your primary care provider. He or she . . .
  • Sees patients with mental health issues each day
  • Feels comfortable discussing mental health
  • Can diagnose and treat common problems
  • Can help you understand and plan the best options for you
  • May recommend testing to identify or rule out any medical conditions contributing to your symptoms
  • Can refer you to mental health care experts in your community

Set an appointment to discuss mental health symptoms. Tell the appointment scheduler you wish to see your doctor for the symptom experienced, such as “frequent panic attacks” or “low mood that is not improving.”

Ask for a twenty- or thirty-minute appointment to allow time to discuss symptoms, get a preliminary diagnosis, and discuss treatment options.
